“The Way of an Indian” is one of the few books that look at the colonial expansion of American wild west through the eyes of a Native Indian. The book faithfully captures their spiritual beliefs, agency and speech to show what it was like to be the original inhabitants of a land that was taken away from them. A must read western classic!
Excerpt
"White Otter's heart was bad. He sat alone on the rim-rocks of the bluffs overlooking the sunlit valley. To an unaccustomed eye from below he might have been a part of nature's freaks among the sand rocks. The yellow grass sloped away from his feet mile after mile to the timber, and beyond that to the prismatic mountains...."
Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of the Old American West, specifically concentrating on the last quarter of the 19th-century American West and images of cowboys, American Indians, and the U. S. Cavalry. Remington's fame made him a favorite of the Western Army officers fighting the last Indian battles.

THE WAY OF AN INDIAN Western Classic edition by Frederic Remington Literature Fiction eBooks

One of the best native American books I have read. Excellent, vivid writing that paints word pictures on a par with his paintings. The story itself revolves around the Cheyenne, in particular, a young warrior of the tribe. It follows his own life along with the life of a changing landscape in America during the latter half of the 1800's. No punches are held back, so if you think this is some watered down fiction be advised it is the real deal, saturated with the beauty of the lifestyle and the land in good times, and the utter desperation and brutality during the bad times. This book is a page turner, and you will hit sections you just cannot put down, full of action and adventure. The details are fantastic, right down to the clothing, horsemanship, battle strategies, etc. Written from the perspective of the Cheyenne warrior, you begin to truely understand the close bond they had with the spiritual world, and how those bonds directed their lives, for good or bad. The link was real, tangible, and creates a thread that runs through the entire story. Published in 1906 from one of the greatest observers of the american West in our history, with an eye towards color, texture and authenticity, this book also comes with the classic trademark of a Remington work----heart!

This book is written in the manner of the times... the ending is particularly overheated. Reading it was a chore. Writing twenty words is
From a historical view it is really good, but it had a lot of military documents that after a set time it was very hard to follow... You may have better luck then I had..... But please note that this was a freebee... So Read it anyway !
Great Book by a Great Author
This was a well-told story about the plight of the American Indian. It gave you an understanding of the Indians point of view and values.
Considering the author I guess this is an accurate portrayal and I was really wanting an understanding of Indians. I think I probably got it.
